It is easy to begin playing at the beginner level where are very few rules. Within 5 to 10 minutes most beginner players will be able to pick up the basic rules and start playing. Most adult players will want to advance to the College play level soon because it requires much more strategy, less luck and increases the game experience. Once mastering the college level, serious game players will want to advance to the pro-level where the rule are much more intricate but the game relies very little on luck and the best strategist will win.
The quickest game option is the Mid-Field version which only takes about 15-20 minutes. This game goes by quickly because yards are applied to the scorecard even if a touchdown has not been scored.
The standard American Football game can be timed to accommodate any time line. Typically a game will take 2 hours , one hour for each half. The longest version of play is to play standard football and scoring ten points (yards) for every touchdown. Those games ordinarily take 3 hours or more sometimes.
Mid-Field version: Both teams line up at mid-field and there is only one down but the rules are the same as full field version of the game.. However if you gain yards even without reaching the end zone, they are counted on the scoreboard. The scoreboard goes to 100 yards. So for example if the first team gins 40 yards, it is marked on the scoreboard. If the first team scores a touchdown on their next turn they get 70 yards (50 yards + 20 bonus for TD) which pushes them over the 100 yard goal to 110 yards total. The second team still has one more drive because both teams have the opportunity to play offense equally. If for example the second team scored a total of 120 yards, they win. That game can last about 7 minutes. This Mid-Field version of the game is a great way to have a quick game and to learn the rules at all play levels.
There are sculpted player pieces that look like real football players which you can buy on this website. There are linemen and back player pieces and you can also request a custom order. The other main type of player piece is the chess-style abstract player pieces. You can images of them on this website and purchase them separately. The reason we ship the flat checker-style player pieces is because it is much easer to move the pieces quickly which allows you to learn the game more easily.
We are currently developing an online simulation of a full size field where 1 yard equals 1 yard. You will have the opportunity of selecting specific players for 1 or 2 teams with your fantasy football picks. Then the simulation will run overnight playing the teams against each other for 100s or 1000s of games. This wil help you determine the strength of your fantasy picks.
The Ball Marker which is the hexagonal shaped thin holder for the ball is used to hold the ball during a pass to determine if the offense or defensive backs can reach the ball to catch it. However the ball marker can also be used to place on the board in various spaces to visualize how the board will look if the player piece is moved there. For example, if there is a back entering the endzone and the defensive back covering him is falling behind. You can place the ball marker in all the possible positions that the receiving back can reach to see if the defensive back will be able to reach it or challenge it. If you move the receiving back to one grid space the defensive back may be able to challenge it, but if you move the receiving back to another location then the defensive back will not be able to challenge it or challenge from a worse position. Note: There are 3 "Challenging Dice": The big one has only 2 completions (COM) and 3 incompletions (INC) and 1 interception (INT) which is great for the defense (2 blues, 4 reds). The smallest challenging die is good for the offense because it only has 2 incompletions (INC) and 4 completions (COM or Star). Which challenging die you use is determined by the defensive player position relative to the intended pass location.
This is not a 100 yard field. It is approximately 1/4 of a standard football field. The markings are there just for reference. Each grid space represents approximately 1X1 yard or 2X2 yards, which becomes clear when compared to the size of the player pieces. The black yard markings along the first grid lane (sidelines) are between 1 and 10 yards. Those are the actual yard markers for the field size.
The field can between 10 or 20 yards depending on the game. When playing the quick version of "Mid-Field" game, then mid-field represents the 50-yard line, If you gained 40 yards in that one down, you score 40 points (yards) on the scoreboard.
When playing a longer standard Grid-Football game, then mid-field represents the 5-yard line, as indicated by the black yard-line markers. The offense starts on their own 20-yardline (8-yardline) which leaves 80 (8) yards toward the endzone. If you score a touchdown within 4 downs, you get 10 points (or 10 yards) on the scoreboard. You get the full 10 yards even if you do not start on the goal line, which is only done in pro-level.
Note: In development is an online and app simulator so you can play against the AI to practice or play against other online players. There will be leaderboards and contests , even playoffs and a Super-Grid-Football match. The field can be scaled to any size up to and including 1:1 yardage ratio. Fantasy Football fans can choose their team players (s) and play against other teams during simulation. You can even play 2 teams against each other for 100s of simulations overnight, and then change fantasy team lineups based on the results.
